Ozone therapy – reliable and free of side effects
Ozone therapy can be used in dentistry for a range of tasks.
Ozone is a gas that quickly kills bacteria, viruses and fungi. In dentistry it is used where germs are hard to reach – and where one would rather manage without an antibiotic.
In periodontitis
The classic application is the periodontal pocket. After mechanical cleaning, ozone reduces the remaining germ count further, including at sites the instrument has not reached. It does not replace the cleaning; it follows it.
Further uses
Ozone can also be used in root canals, in incipient decay and before a filling is placed. The application takes seconds, is painless and leaves no taste.
One qualification: the effect on germs is well documented, while the long-term benefit for the outcome of treatment is still being investigated in the professional literature. Ozone is a complement, not a substitute for the proven steps of periodontal therapy.
