The first visit to the dental practice

Parents should announce a visit to the dentist in good time.

Children playing dentist: a girl sits laughing in the treatment chair while two boys hold a mouth mirror and a suction tip

The best moment for the first visit comes early: about six months after the first milk tooth has come through, so usually around the first birthday. Not because there would already be something to do, but because the child should get to know the practice while nothing hurts.

What matters when announcing it

Well-meant sentences often do harm. “You don't need to be afraid” and “it certainly won't hurt” are what first suggest there might be a reason for fear. Better is an announcement without a negative: “Today someone is going to take a really close look at your teeth.”

The first appointment leaves its mark

Because children remember their first treatment for a long time, it is best to begin with a preventive session – looking, counting, polishing. Starting this way and coming back regularly builds a relationship that holds even when something really does have to be treated.
