Diabetes and periodontitis are linked – in both directions
That diabetes raises the risk of periodontitis has long been known. The reverse direction is less familiar: extensive inflammation in the mouth affects the whole body and can make blood sugar harder to control. Professional bodies in dentistry and diabetology therefore speak of a two-way relationship.
In practice that means two things. Anyone with diabetes should have the periodontium examined regularly – and the practice should know about the condition. And anyone being treated for periodontitis should mention the findings to their GP or diabetes specialist.
What is documented is an association, not an automatic mechanism. Periodontal treatment does not replace diabetes therapy, nor the other way round. That both sides know about each other is nevertheless sensible.
Tell the dental practice which conditions you are known to have and which medication you take. It belongs to the examination and influences the planning.
