Caries in the milk dentition
Auch im Kindermund bilden sich aus den Resten der Nahrung und dem Speichel Zahnbelag und Plaque
Caries in the milk dentition is no marginal issue: from the second year of life onwards it affects many children. The most common route there leads through the bottle – juice, tea or sweetened drinks, often sipped over hours.
Why milk teeth are more vulnerable
Their enamel is thinner and softer than that of permanent teeth. Acid penetrates faster and the distance to the nerve is shorter. What takes months in an adult happens here in weeks.
What helps against it
The bottle does not belong in bed nor permanently in the hand. Between meals there is water. And brushing happens twice a day – from the start, with parental help.
Caries on milk teeth does not stay there: the bacteria also colonise the permanent teeth coming through behind them.
